At Alteon Health we’re big proponents of using our talents to serve those most vulnerable. In 2015 we established a non-profit organization, White Coats Worldwide, dedicated to providing medical care, training, and supplies in under-served communities worldwide.
We were recently approached by an attendee of the ACOEP 2017 Scientific Assembly, who asked if we may be interested in supporting the Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine’s medical student mission to Guatemala by providing supplies — namely sunglasses — to be distributed at their medical clinic. The CUSOM students saw a need for the sunglasses on a previous trip when they noticed many patients had no protection from the sun and were experiencing eye problems as a result of prolonged sun exposure.
Alteon’s White Coats Worldwide (WCW) gladly provided the supplies and would like to share the impact these medical students were able to make in the Guatemalan community:
“Our trip was wonderful, we saw nearly 600 patients and we were able to give out every single pair of sunglasses! We had about 600 pairs in all and they were so appreciated by the people there. Every patient that came through our clinic in need of eye protection was able to receive that and we still had some left over to give to those that may need it in the future, and even those that just wanted some!
On our last clinic day we visited the city dump where we were, there is a community of people living there. There was such a need there for the glasses as these people have no relief from the sun and no access to protection.
Again, we are so grateful for your donation. it really made a difference in the lives of the people that received the glasses.”
