Our Story

Today we deliver better outcomes by putting people at the center.

At Alteon Health, we’re advancing positive outcomes for hospitals, physicians, and patients—each and every day.

In 2017, we saw an opportunity to bring together the best in our industry to create an unrivaled network of partners and drive better outcomes for the people we serve.

To deliver on this opportunity, we brought together two leaders in our industry—Emergency Medicine Associates and Island Medical Management.

EMA, a physician-owned practice, has been a leader in emergency medical services since 1971, serving one million patients annually across Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

IMM, also a physician-owned organization providing services in emergency medicine and hospitalist medicine, has over 20 years of experience in medical management and touches two million patients each year through its 80+ programs.

With common values and complementary strengths, these two organizations are uniquely suited to come together as Alteon Health, a name that signals our commitment to setting a higher standard in healthcare.

For hospitals, this means assembling a staff of the most engaged, loyal, and highly performing physicians in the industry—enhancing their departments and enabling the highest quality service.

For clinicians, this means creating an environment that promotes career development and ongoing clinical improvement. Steve Holtzclaw, MD, FACEP, MBA

Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Steve Holtzclaw serves as Chief Executive Officer of Alteon Health. As an accomplished physician and veteran leader in the physician services industry, Dr. Holtzclaw has led the transformation of hundreds of emergency medicine, acute care, ambulatory care, and anesthesiology programs nationwide. Prior to joining Alteon, he served most recently as President of Hospital-Based services for TeamHealth. In this role Dr. Holtzclaw was responsible for leading the expansion and progress of healthy business relationships with hospital clients, financial solvency and revenue generation, clinician relations, and organizational development.

Dr. Holtzclaw has an extensive clinical background, beginning his career as an EMT/Paramedic at Helene Fuld Hospital in New Jersey from 1979-1990. He received undergraduate degrees in business administration and biology before attending medical school at the University of Maryland, where he graduated in 1990. He completed his emergency medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins University and pursued an Executive MBA at the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Holtzclaw was named Chairman of the Emergency Department at The Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, in 2001. He has over 20 years of practice history at Johns Hopkins University, where he is currently responsible teaching medical students and residents at the bedside as a member of the emergency medicine program faculty. An esteemed mentor and colleague, Dr. Holtzclaw continues to practice clinically.

John Mulligan, MD, MBA, FACEP

Chief Clinical Officer

John Mulligan, MD, MBA, FACEP is Chief Clinical Officer for Alteon Health. Prior to joining Alteon Health, Dr. Mulligan served as Senior Vice President of Envision Healthcare, where he was responsible for the implementation of many quality initiatives and enhancements to the patient experience, including integration of electronic medical record systems in various emergency departments. Prior to joining Envision in 2015, he was an active Board member and Managing Partner of Emergency Physicians Medical Group (EMPG) for over 15 years.

Dr. Mulligan earned his undergraduate degree at Loyola University Chicago before attending medical school at the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1995. He completed his emergency medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University and later went on to receive an MBA from the Northwestern Kellogg School of Business.

Additionally, Dr. Mulligan dedicated eight years of active duty service to the Army Medical Corps where he received advanced training in the medical management of WMDs and served as the Chief Surety Officer of Aberdeen Proving Grounds and the United States Army Military Research of Chemical Defense (USAMRCD).

Dr. Mulligan serves on the faculty of Loyola University Medical Center as an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and is an active Board member of the Emergency Department Practice Management Association (EDPMA). He is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and licensed in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, and Delaware. He continues to practice clinically throughout the Midwest.

Wolf Schynoll, MD, FACEP

Chief Performance Officer

Wolf Schynoll, MD, FACEP, serves as Chief Performance Officer of Alteon Health. Dr. Schynoll is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and has served in a multitude of leadership roles, including 10 years of service as the President of his Wisconsin-based emergency medicine practice, and five years with the Studer Group as the firm’s first Physician Performance Coach.

During his time with Studer Wolf worked with medical practices of all specialties, sizes, and scope to assist them in achieving measurable performance improvement. Throughout his 11-year career as a performance coach, he has worked with hundreds of medical practices and personally educated, coached, or collaborated with over 15,000 physicians and physician leaders. He joined TeamHealth as Vice President for Performance Improvement in 2013.

Dr. Schynoll attended medical school at the University of Minnesota and completed his residency at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Amy Charley, JD

Chief Legal & Administrative Officer

Amy Charley, JD, serves as Chief Legal & Administrative Officer of Alteon Health. Amy is a corporate attorney with twenty years of experience collaborating with leadership teams to create strategic, efficient, and cost-effective business solutions. Prior to joining Alteon, she served as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Office of Advanced Recovery Systems, a Fort Lauderdale-based integrated behavioral healthcare company, where she was responsible for overseeing the departments of legal, compliance, licensing, internal audit, and human resources for over four years. Previously, Amy spent almost ten years with Sheridan Healthcare (now Envision Healthcare), one of the nation’s largest providers of hospital-based physician services, serving first as Assistant General Counsel and later assuming the role of Deputy General Counsel.

Additional prior roles include serving as a Judicial Clerk for the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, as a Senior Attorney of Burger King Corporation, and as an Associate of Holland & Knight, where she worked on multi-district litigation for large international clients.

Amy earned her BA at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, and is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law in Coral Gables, Florida. She is active in her local community and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and as Executive Officer of the Association of Corporate Counsel of South Florida.

Cary McNamara, MAcc

Chief Financial Officer

Cary McNamara serves as Alteon Health’s Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Alteon, Mr. McNamara was the CFO of i2i Population Health, a leading population health management solution for federally qualified health centers, and Agilum Healthcare Intelligence, a software-as-a-service business intelligence solution. He was also the interim-CFO of EDO Interactive, a card-linked offer provider backed by Baird Capital & Vantage Point.

Previous to these positions, Mr. McNamara was an Associate at Court Square Capital and an analyst at Goldman, Sachs & Co. He received his B.A. summa cum laude from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina.

Michael Hite, RN, MBA, MHA

Chief Operating Officer

Michael Hite, RN, MBA, MHA, serves as Chief Operating Officer of Alteon Health. In this capacity, Mr. Hite provides executive oversight and leadership to Alteon’s revenue cycle management – including billing, coding, provider enrollment, and clinical documentation – as well as the practice’s managed care programs, IT initiatives, and strategic growth in technology and partnerships.

Prior to joining Alteon Health, Mr. Hite worked in executive positions at UnitedHealth Group (UHG) and the Advisory Board Company. Additionally, he held previous Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer roles for large, for-profit hospital management organizations, where he led strategic, operational, and physician partnership initiatives. Mr. Hite remains clinically active as a registered nurse and paramedic, continuing nearly 20 years of clinical experience as an emergency department and critical care transport nurse.

Mr. Hite earned his Bachelor of Arts from Boston University, and both his Master of Healthcare Administration and Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland. He maintains specialty certifications in emergency nursing (CEN), flight nursing (CFRN), and health care quality (CPHQ), and remains actively engaged in his local community, serving in academic roles at The George Washington University, and volunteering with Montgomery County Fire Rescue.

Mano Kalathil

Chief Technology Officer

Mano Kalathil serves as Chief Technology Officer of Alteon Health. Mr. Kalathil’s expertise is building teams, designing solutions, and scaling both. His career has afforded him the opportunity to do this within healthcare companies both as an operational leader and as a trusted advisor.

Prior to joining Alteon, Mano served as Chief Technology Officer, or in similar leadership roles, at healthcare-focused companies including CareSync, Crankfrog, and ActiveHealth Management (Aetna). At ActiveHealth he was responsible building and scaling their population health management products for large payers, employers, and provider organizations.

Mano earned his Bachelor of Engineering degree at Bangalore University and is a graduate of the CIO Pathways Program from the CIO Executive Council. He is an active member of industry forums in the DC area, an advisor to healthcare startups, and served on the Board of Directors of Tampa Bay Tech from 2016-2017.

Bill Cox, MHA

Chief Growth Officer

Bill Cox, MHA, serves as Chief Growth Officer of Alteon Health. Bill has proven leadership success in the areas of hospital-based services, ambulatory physician practice operations, and hospital-physician joint ventures. Prior to joining Alteon, he most recently served as Regional President at MEDNAX, a healthcare organization focused on neonatal, anesthesia, maternal-fetal, and pediatric physician subspecialty services. Additionally, Bill held several previous roles at MEDNAX and served as Regional Vice President of the Southern Region from 2015 to 2017, and Director of Operations of Anesthesiology Services in the southern region from 2013 to 2015.
Before joining the MEDNAX organization, Bill oversaw anesthesia practices and outpatient ambulatory surgery centers and the development of De Novo surgery centers and surgical specialty hospitals. He also served as the Chief Executive Officer of a successful orthopedic clinic comprised of 23 clinicians serving an ambulatory surgery center with a ten-bed convalescent center, physical therapy department, and MRI center.
Bill holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Minnesota State University in Moorhead, Minnesota.

Martin Brown, MD, FACEP, FAAEM

Divisional President

Dr. Brown attended the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed residency training at The George Washington University Medical Center. He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. Dr. Brown has been on the faculties in the Departments of Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University Medical Center and Georgetown University Hospital. While chairing the Department of Emergency Medicine at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park Maryland, Dr. Brown opened the first Chest Pain Center in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Since 2000 Dr. Brown has been the Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Inova Alexandria Hospital. An expert in applying Lean process improvement strategies to improve Emergency Department operations, Dr. Brown has been supervising the application of those strategies across the EMA platform. Dr. Brown has been the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Emergency Medicine Associates since 2007 and has been instrumental in the organic growth of the organization.

Vince Morra

Divisional President

Vincent Morra has over 26 years of healthcare experience. He served as CEO of NES Healthcare Group for over 10 years, and currently serves as President of the Midwest Region for Alteon. Mr. Morra’s leadership and industry experience have propelled him to lead multiple initiatives in business development, customer retention, and mergers/acquisitions in Emergency Medicine. In addition Mr. Morra serves on multiple community boards.

Bob Moosally, DO, FACEP

SVP, Midwest Region

Board Certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine, Robert T. Moosally earned his doctoral degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000. Dr. Moosally has extensive operational and clinical leadership experience. Under his direction, an independent emergency medicine residency program was established and approved by the American Osteopathic Association at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, Ohio, where he served as the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director for three years. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Moosally’s peers and colleagues have bestowed upon him several acknowledgements and awards of recognition including Outstanding Specialty Preceptor of the Year, as voted by Ohio University Medical Students, and Outstanding Physician Partner, as voted by the nursing staff at St. Joseph Health Center.

Dan Ferrara, DO, FACEP

President, Northeast Region

Dr. Dan Ferrara is President of Alteon Health’s Northeast Region. He previously served as founder, President, and Chairman of the Board of Island Medical Management (IMM).

Prior to founding IMM, Dr. Ferrara was Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital, New Island Hospital, and Massapequa General Hospital.

Dr. Ferrara is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He graduated from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and earned a bachelor’s in biology from Allegheny College.

Jose Aguirre, MD, SFHM

Division President, Hospital Medicine

Dr. Aguirre is a board-certified physician with 11 years of experience in hospital medicine. He is a Senior Fellow with the Society of Hospital Medicine. He founded Aguirre Healthcare in 2007, and grew the organization to include over 150 providers throughout four states prior to merging with Island Medical Management (IMM) in 2016. In addition to hospital medicine, the practice provides Medical Director oversight to more than 20 skilled nursing facilities and long term acute care centers (LTACs). Dr. Aguirre strongly believes in providing clinical excellence to all patients throughout the continuum of care.

Tom Cooper, MD

Independent Director

Dr. Cooper is a nationally recognized healthcare entrepreneur who has used his medical training and business acumen to found several leading healthcare companies, including Spectrum Emergency Care, a national emergency physician company (acquired by Laidlaw, now a part of EmCare), Correctional Medical Services (Corizon), the largest correctional facility healthcare company in the U.S., MobileX USA, the largest provider of X-Ray/EKG to nursing homes (acquired by Integrated Health Services) (now TridentUSA), and Vericare, the largest provider of mental health services to patients in long term care facilities. He has also served on the boards of TridentUSA Health Services (acquired by Formation Capital) and Elements Behavioral Health, both Frazier portfolio companies. He is Chairman of Hanger, Inc., and served on the board of IPC, the Hospitalist Group, Kindred, Inc., and Community Health Systems, Inc. He is an adjunct professor at The Columbia Business School, where he taught courses on entrepreneurship for four years and continues to lecture at several MBA programs on healthcare entrepreneurship.

Chris Krubert, MD

Independent Director

Dr. Chris Krubert has led the transformation of over 125 emergency departments nationwide as both an active clinician and Medical Director. His experience has allowed him to become an innovator in the areas of patient flow, physician compensation incentive programs, customer service and patient satisfaction, financial management, and clinical strategies. He was CEO of ApolloMD from 2005-2013, and has consulted for many of the top medical systems in the U.S., lecturing on the topic of healthcare quality around the world. He currently teaches the Business of Healthcare course at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Dr. Krubert was an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year recipient for healthcare in 2010 and sits as a Board Director for 4 leading healthcare companies, providing him the insights of being able to deliver high quality, compassionate care in complex settings and to do so in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Dr. Krubert received his MD from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, trained in emergency medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals, and attained his MBA from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

Frederic Salerno

Independent Director

Frederic Salerno serves as an Independent Director of Alteon Health. Fred is a senior advisor, investor, and Board director in the healthcare, technology, and telecom industries. He most recently served as Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of Verizon, where he was responsible for leading strategic planning efforts, business development, and finance functions. Additional roles include serving as a current and former Director of Akamai Technologies, CBS Corp., Intercontinental Exchange, Consolidated Edison, and Stroz Friedberg.

Kent Wallace

Independent Director

Kent Wallace serves as an Independent Director of Alteon Health. Kent has deep experience in the healthcare industry, having previously served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Kindred Healthcare and Gentiva Health Services. He also serves as a Director for RCCH HealthCare Partners in addition to several other healthcare services organizations.
